Housecall Pro "Category name is required"

Housecall Pro groups every price book item under a category. If a row has no category, the import stops with a category-is-required error.

What this error means

In Housecall Pro, Category is a required field. It is the top-level grouping a service or material lives underneath — every service belongs to a category within an industry, and every material belongs to a category. When a row’s category is missing, Housecall Pro cannot place the item, so it reports that the category name is required and the import fails.

Documented causes

  • The row simply has no value in the Category column.
  • The file has no Category column at all, or it wasn’t mapped to Category in the import wizard.
  • The category cell looks filled but only contains spaces or an invisible character, so it counts as blank.

How to fix it, step by step

  1. Confirm your file has a Category column with a clear header.
  2. Fill in a category for every row — no item can be left uncategorized.
  3. During import, map your column to Housecall Pro’s Category field.
  4. Watch for cells that appear filled but are actually spaces; clear and retype them if unsure.
  5. Re-validate the file, then re-import.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming a blank category will “default” to something — it won’t; the row fails.
  • Leaving the first data row as a header, so the real first item has no category once headers are detected.
  • Category values that are only whitespace after a copy-paste from another tool.
  • A category column that exists but was left unmapped in the wizard.

Prevent it next time

A category on every row is the simplest rule to keep. The price book checker flags the exact rows missing a required value and detects whitespace-only cells that look filled but aren’t. If you’re building from scratch, the price book template already includes the Category column in the right place.

FAQ

Is Category required for every price book item?
Yes. Category is a required field in Housecall Pro. Services belong to a category within an industry, and materials belong to a category, so every row needs one.
Will Housecall Pro assign a default category if I leave it blank?
No. A blank category is not filled in automatically — the row is rejected with a category-is-required error until you supply a value.
