Housecall Pro "Invalid Industry" error
Every service in a Housecall Pro price book needs an industry, and it has to match one of Housecall Pro's own industries exactly. When it doesn't, the row is rejected as an invalid industry.
What this error means
In a Housecall Pro price book, Industry is a required field for services — it is the top grouping a category lives inside. Housecall Pro only accepts an industry whose name matches one already in your account. If the value in your file is empty, contains a stray character, or is spelled differently from Housecall Pro’s version, the import treats it as an invalid industry and stops.
Documented causes
Housecall Pro’s help documentation lists three reasons an industry is rejected:
- The industry cell is blank.
- It contains a special character that isn’t in the real industry name.
- It is spelled incorrectly — it must be spelled exactly as it appears in Housecall Pro’s industry options.
How to fix it, step by step
- Open Housecall Pro and note how your industries are written in the price book (the exact wording and capitalization).
- In your CSV or spreadsheet, find the Industry column and compare each value against that list.
- Correct blanks, typos, and stray characters so every row’s industry matches an existing Housecall Pro industry.
- Make sure the industry column is actually mapped as Industry during the import wizard, not left unmapped.
- Re-check the file before re-importing.
Common mistakes
- Using an abbreviation or a house style (for example a short trade code) instead of the industry name Housecall Pro shows.
- Trailing spaces or a hidden character copied from another spreadsheet — invisible but enough to fail the match.
- Leaving the industry blank on a handful of rows near the bottom of the file.
- Inconsistent capitalization or punctuation between otherwise-identical industry names.
Prevent it next time
Keep one authoritative spelling for each industry and reuse it everywhere. The price book checker flags blank industries and highlights values it doesn’t recognize as warnings, and cleans the invisible whitespace and control characters that cause silent mismatches — so you can catch an invalid industry before Housecall Pro does. Starting fresh? Use the price book template so the Industry column is there from the start.
FAQ
- Is Industry required in a Housecall Pro price book?
- Yes — for services, Industry is required. Each service sits inside a category, and each category sits inside an industry, so a blank industry causes the row to fail.
- Does the industry name have to match exactly?
- Yes. Housecall Pro only imports an industry whose name matches one of the industries already in your account, spelled exactly as shown. Blanks, misspellings, and special characters are rejected.
- Can ImportFix tell me the correct industry names?
- ImportFix flags blank or unrecognized industries and cleans hidden characters, but it does not invent Housecall Pro's industry list. Use the exact industry names shown in your own Housecall Pro account.
